How far west do you have to go before expressways become known as freeways?
Q. In most of the country a divided, controlled access is known as an expressway. Out west, they call them freeways even when they have tolls. Where is the dividing line?

A. I don't know the exact answer to your question, but in case no one else does, either, I thought I'd try to help by letting you know that here in MN, we call them "freeways". We don't have tollways (yet?) but I'm sure that if we did, they'd still be called freeways.

What is speed and degrees south of west after the collision?
Q. One billiard ball is shot east at 3.0 m/s. A second, identical billiard ball is shot west at 1.0 m/s. The balls have a glancing collision, not a head-on collision, deflecting the second ball by 90 and sending it north at 1.60 m/s.

A. The total momentum of the system before the collision was 2.0 m/s eastward, the momentum in the north-south direction before the collision was 0. Momentum is conserved. Thus after the collision the 1.60 m/s to north of the second ball must be balanced by 1.60 m/s to the south of the first ball. Also, because the second ball does not have a velocity in the east-west direction the first ball must have a vertical component of 2.0 m/s. Given the two components the total velocity is: sqrt((2.0 m/s)^2 + (1.60 m/s)^2) = 2.6 m/s The direction is arctan(1.60/2.0) = 39 degrees south of east.

How do you transfer a Bachelors Degree from West Africa to The United States?
Q. I am married to a man from West Africa (Burkino Faso) and we are trying to find out how to transfer his Bachelors Degree in Mathematics and Physics over to the United States. We need to find out if he needs to take any additional classes in the US in order to obtain the same degree here. We don't know where to start...Any info would be greatly appreciated.

A. Contact your local state university, as each university decides if a particular degree will be accepted by them. He may need to take a test, but the school will definitely need a copy of his transcripts as well as a description of each course he took. If he has any papers and/or tests from his college days, that would help. I can tell you from some experience that often a bachelors degree from a developing country translates into about an associates degree here in the US (but each case is different).
